the northwest coast of Borneo
at the mouth of the Brunei Bay.
Its safe harbour has always been
popular with seafarers from days
of old who travelled the Brunei
Bay and the South China Sea to
seek refuge from the monsoon winds
and pirate attacks. They called
it "Labuhan" - a Brunei Malay
word meaning anchorage. Over time,
this was shortened to sound like
"Labuan", hence the origin of
its name. |
The island is accessible from Brunei by a 45 minutes ferry ride from Muara
jetty. There are around five daily
ferry services between Muara and Labuan. |
Labuan is a duty free port and
a well known shopping destination in
Malaysia. It is Asia's fastest growing
international offshore financial center.
A wide range of offshore banking and
account service facilities are available
here. It has beautiful beaches, enchanting
culture and fascinative history. It
is a world class destination for sport
fishing, jet ski and wreck diving adventures. |
